The Role of NGOs in Combating Climate Change
Other than governments, businesses, and individuals, NGOs can have a great role in combating climate change. Nowadays, there are a variety of NGOs that have made great achievements and progresses in helping the world tackle the issue of climate change.
For example, the NGO WWF launched the 1 in 5 challenge, asking businesses to reduce every 1 in 5 of their commercial flights. A lot of companies tried out the challenge, including the company Vodafone, which ended up having higher employee retention rates and lower costs spent on their projects due to how the reduced plane flights saved them money and allowed employees to stay beside their families more often.
NGOs have a perspective unique to that of businesses and governments: they advocate for the interest of no one else but nature itself. They do not have goals such as raising their own profits or protecting the welfare of their own country. Thus, their actions come out purely from the goal of maximizing the benefit for the environment, making them efficient in carrying our projects that have a sustainable aim.
