How to Cultivate Urban Green Spaces
Urban green spaces includes parks, community gardens, and rooftops. Not only do they enhance the life quality of city residents and provide places for entertainment and rest, they also serve important ecological functions in reducing the urban heat island effect and preventing urban flooding during times of intense precipitation.
To cultivate urban green spaces, several elements of preparation are needed.
Firstly, the city government has to plan for such spaces during the planning stage of the city. Enough space has to be left between buildings in order to place a park and consideration will be required in which rooftops or vacant lots can be transformed into green spaces.
Secondly, community involvement is especially important in the cultivation of green spaces such as community gardens. Neighborhoods can gather people interested in such an effort and organize events in which residents nearby gather to cultivate plants in the garden.
Most importantly, the city planning committee has to recognize the importance of green spaces and learn to balance the ecological needs of the city with its economic development.
