How to Create Sustainable Communities

The term sustainability has three aspects: social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability. To create a sustainable community, it is important to achieve all three aspects of the term’s definition.

To achieve environmental sustainability, a community has to adopt renewable sources of energy like solar or wind power and improve their housing and building code so that each house uses energy in higher efficiency. This reduces the total energy consumption and the amount of energy production that generates carbon emissions.

To achieve social sustainability, a community has to be inclusive towards its members and ensure that each of its members have access to great quality housing, education, healthcare, and services.

To achieve economic sustainability, a community has to balance economic development with environmental sustainability. The community can adopt circular economy, create green jobs, and invest in infrastructure or projects that enhance both the economic strength and the environmental friendliness of themselves. Only then can a sustainable community be created.
