How Smart Cities are Fighting Climate Change

There are many ways in which smart cities can fight climate change.

Firstly, smart cities plan themselves in a reasonable way so that offices, residential and commercial areas can be reached within 15 minutes of walking. Smart cities should also have a dense concentration of public transportation routes to encourage the use of low-carbon transportation methods. Also, smart cities can be planned with wide bicycle lanes on the side of roads to encouraging green transportation.

Secondly, smart cities are packed with green buildings. These buildings have great insulation and requires little energy in order to be heated up or cooled down. This means that the energy use of occupants of these buildings can be lowered, and that less emissions will be made in order to supply the people of such cities with energy.

Thirdly, smart cities design themselves so that they involve lots of green spaces which allow carbon sequestration and serve as pivotal spots for storm water infiltration and flood prevention in times of unpredictable precipitation.

A smart city should combine all three characteristics in order to adapt to the world under climate change and also contribute to mitigating the environmental problem that the globe faces today.
